When you donât know what to do, do what you know to do.

It is my mantra when I feel aimless, like whatever mystical thing that holds my thoughts together like skin is gone, and Iâm dissipating, drifting away from myself. When simple choices feel like advanced calculus, I recite, âJust do what you know to do.â
Deep breath, one foot in front of the other.
In my frozen 6:00 p.m.âs, what I know to do is to pick a child, any child, and hug it. I canât fix all the hurts, but I can fix one. Next, I clear one little corner of a room to function as a sanctuary; I throw armfuls of toys and laundry and trash into a hamper and shove it out of sight, wrap the babies in blankets, and sit them in the sanctuary with juice boxes. In clearing a space I clear my brain. My living room and my brain are connected in a mystical, spiritual way. When one is clean, so is the otherâand vice versa. When I donât know what to do, I just do somethingâanythingâthat I know is right. I nurture something. Clean, fix, and solve something. Anything.
For you, it might be to do homework for one classâjust one. Just to be able to cross one thing off of the to-do list. Just make one phone call. Just do the next right thing.
This principleâdoing what you know to doâworks on a grand scale as well as it does on a daily 6:00 p.m. scale.
The Bible, the Word of God, tells us what is right in every situation. It speaks to our actions, words, thoughts, and attitudesâit addresses our whole selves and how those selves interact with the world around us. Whether we are frozen or floating, we can pick something, anything, that God tells us is right and do it.
When you donât know what to do, it is better to follow Scripture than it is to follow your passions, your dreams, your skills, your brain, your intuition, or anything else. Scripture is the only safe choice.
